Hello!
I have decided that it is time for me to share with you how to make vegan bagels.
I love bread but for bagels, I have a special type of love. Bagels are so delicious and easy to make, anyone can learn how to make vegan bagels.
Today, I am going to share with you how to make vegan bagels from scratch. I created this recipe based on a bunch of different recipes and techniques that I could find on the internet.
So far, this method on how to make vegan bagels has not failed me. I suggest you try it!
I would like to stress again on the fact that this bagels recipe is extremely easy, there are no complicated ingredients or things to do. Trust me, you can make these vegan bagels with your eyes closed….Joking 🙂 ..but almost.
Step by Step Guide on How to Make Vegan Bagels
For this recipe, you will need some flour, a bit of sugar, a pinch of salt for flavor and some lukewarm water. (if you have a thermometer and like to be precise, some believe its about 36.5 to 40.4 degrees Celsius)
Note: I do not own a professional mixer or a blender, so I did this recipe by hand. If you have a mixer, go ahead and take it out and use it.
Step 1: In a mixing bowl combine all of your dry ingredients. That is flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix the dry ingredients, so they are well incorporated later.
Step 2: Now add your lukewarm water, and mix it all together. You can use any spatula you have for the beginning. If you have a mixer, your job is nearly over 😀
Step 3: Once your dough has formed, nearly keeping it together, it’s time for you to use your hands and knead it gently. It will take about 7-10 minutes until you achieve a well-combined dough that is soft yet slightly sticky. Another hint you can look for is your dough is no longer sticking to the side of the bowl.
Remember to be gentle!
Step 4: Once you’ve kneaded the dough well, it’s time to let it rest. For this, you can either take a new bowl, coat it lightly in olive oil and transfer the dough there. However, I personally do not like using too many appliances, so if you are like me, you can leave the dough resting in the same bowl as well. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough sit for 30-35 minutes in a warm place.
You can place it in the oven…but make sure it is off. It is not ready to be cooked just yet.
Once your dough has risen, now is time to proceed with making our vegan bagels.
Step 5: Take out the dough, and place it on a wooden board or a clean kitchen counter.
Step 6: Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces. For this you can either use a scale and weigh each piece…or you can just estimate it.
Step 7: Fold these pieces into small balls. Cover them with a towel and let them sit for another 20 minutes.
Step 8: Shape your bagels. and let them sit for another 30 minutes.
Step 9: Now we are going to need to boil some water in a small to a medium pan. Once the water has reached boiling temperature, you can start placing these vegan bagels into the water.
My pot fits about 2 bagels so they do not stick to each other.
Note: When you are here, you can start preheating your oven. (200 degrees Celsius )
Step 10: Cook for 60 seconds on each side and take them out. Place them on the baking sheet with baking paper.
We are nearly done.
This is my favorite part!
Step 11: Now is the time for topping. You can use sesame seeds, poppy seeds, some maybe pumpkin seeds? Garlic? …go ahead and be creative.
Step 12: Place your bagels into the oven once ready for 15 – 20 minutes.
Voila!
You have made delicious fluffy vegan bagels.
I would love to hear about your bagel-making experience…so leave a comment and tell me all about it!
